Why Is It Hard to Find a Job Today?

And When Might Things Turn Around?

Let’s be honest: if your job search feels like running a marathon on a treadmill, you’re not imagining it. Finding a job today is tough—and not just for those making career pivots or entering the workforce for the first time. Even seasoned professionals are feeling stuck, ghosted, or downright disillusioned by the process.

So what’s going on? Why does the job hunt feel harder than ever, and when can we expect things to shift?

A Perfect Storm of Slowdowns

The short answer: it’s complicated. The longer answer? A mix of economic uncertainty, corporate restructuring, AI-fueled job transformations, and cautious hiring has created a market that feels like it’s running in place.

In 2023 and 2024, we watched many companies pull back. Inflation, interest rate hikes, and lingering global supply chain issues all played a part. And while high-profile layoffs in tech made headlines, what didn’t make the front page was the “quiet freeze” happening elsewhere—roles left open indefinitely, hiring plans paused, or entire departments restructured before anyone was brought onboard.

According to a 2024 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average time to fill a role in the U.S. stretched to 44 days—up from 36 days pre-pandemic. That’s a full week longer of waiting, following up, and wondering what’s next.

More Candidates, Fewer Openings

On top of that, the volume of candidates per role has grown significantly. A 2024 LinkedIn Workforce Report found that the number of applicants per open position is up 54% year-over-year in industries like tech, marketing, and professional services.

Part of this comes from a surge of highly skilled professionals laid off from large companies, all looking for similar roles. In parallel, college grads and career changers are entering the pool—making it harder than ever to stand out, even with experience and a polished résumé.

And let’s not ignore the emotional toll: applying to 50+ jobs without hearing back isn’t just disheartening, it’s demoralizing.

When Will the Job Market Turn Around?

Here's the question on everyone’s mind: When does this get better?

There’s cautious optimism among economists and business leaders that the market will begin to rebound in late 2025 to early 2026. According to a recent Glassdoor Hiring Trends report, over 60% of business executives surveyed say they expect to increase full-time hiring once inflation stabilizes and long-term consumer spending forecasts become more predictable.

Further optimism comes from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which predicts industries like healthcare, green energy, and infrastructure will see sustained hiring growth in the coming 12–18 months due to both federal investment and demographic demand.

The takeaway: we may be in a slower cycle, but it’s not permanent.

What You Can Do Right Now

While you can’t control market timing, you can control your positioning. Here’s how job seekers can stay resilient:

  • Network intentionally: Attend virtual or in-person events in your industry. Tap former colleagues. A warm introduction beats a cold application any day.

  • Refresh your skills: Upskilling in AI tools, data analysis, and project management can add immediate value—especially in industries adapting to tech shifts.

  • Think short-term, act long-term: Contract, freelance, or part-time work can keep your skills sharp and help you stay visible.

  • Be ready for the rebound: Keep an updated résumé, build your personal brand on LinkedIn, and stay close to recruiters who know the market.

At Rekruitd, we’re not just watching the market—we’re navigating it with you. We specialize in matching the right talent to the right opportunity, even when the path isn’t linear.

And when the right role opens up? You’ll be ready.
